"About Nicole "NFJ" James: the Feral FX Story "

A Screenplay: Loosely Based on a True Story

OPENING TITLE, WHITE ON BLACK: OCTOBER 12, 1995: 5:26 PM

INTERIOR: HOSPITAL DELIVERY ROOM

We see a WOMAN laying in a hospital bed, giving birth, DOCTORS and NURSES giving her encouragement, the FATHER is nearby.

CUT TO INT. BEDROOMS – SOMEONE SOMEWHERE bolting upright in bed. We see several more shots of DIFFERENT PEOPLE in VARIED LOCATIONS populate the screen, all bolting upright in bed.

BACK TO INT. BEDROOM– SOMEONE SOMEWHERE looks down at their arm.

CUT TO – SOMEONE SOMEWHERE’s arm. It is covered with goosebumps.

INT. HOSPITAL DELIVERY ROOM

The WOMAN has finished giving birth. The DOCTOR hands her a swaddled baby. We CUT to a close up of the BABY, who is dead silent and seemingly content to be resting. The WOMAN looks between the BABY, the DOCTOR, and the FATHER.

WOMAN

She isn’t crying?

We CUT TO

INT. BEDROOM

SOMEONE SOMEWHERE, is looking confused, rubbing the back of their neck, looking around. The shock felt around the world goes relatively unregistered, but SOMEONE SOMEWHERE can’t shake the feeling that everything has changed. We cut back to

INT. HOSPITAL DELIVERY ROOM

The DOCTOR shrugs.  We ZOOM IN on the BABY, and as we ZOOM, her eyes open and we zoom INTO them. We’re racing through a MYSTICAL TUNNEL, Willy Wonka style but without the madman chanting nonsense and scaring children. As we travel like Doctor Who through space and time, we see flashes of the BABY’s childhood and we see her grow up. She’s painting, she’s sculpting, she’s building. We see her watching movies and falling in love with the craft. We see her with the WOMAN, we see her with the FATHER, with a SISTER, with FRIENDS and PEERS. We race though the magic tunnel, past a Pride Flag and we see her working on something with her PARTNER. We see her identifying with wild animals, relating their wildness with her desire to deviate from the norm and create wild things of her own, respecting their ability to find their space and stand their ground. We see her laughing and crying and working through the tears and facing her fears and learning from mistakes.

We see her working hard in team and independent environments.

We see her learning new skills, always striving to be better.

We see her designing, fabricating, and working on a wide variety of projects.

We see her being empathetic, diplomatic, and understanding.

We see her going the extra mile on everything she does.

We EXIT the magic tunnel.

CUT TO TITLE: PRESENT DAY

INT. STUDIO/SHOP SPACE

We see the BABY, but now she is full grown. She is Nicole James. NFJ, a burgeoning special effects, props, and prosthetics fabricator and artist. She is dressed for an interview.  She’s ready. She is Feral FX, and she's here to make something wild. The office door opens, and we see SOMEONE SOMEWHERE. They see NFJ and they know on sight that this is what woke them up all those years ago on that clear Thursday evening. NFJ wants nothing more than to do good work for SOMEONE SOMEWHERE.

CUT TO TITLE: THE NEAR FUTURE

INT. DOLBY THEATER, LOS ANGELES

We see NFJ and SOMEONE SOMEWHERE on stage receiving an Academy Award for Best Fabrication, an award they invented just for NFJ and SOMEONE SOMEWHERE’s work. Can you imagine?

But of course, you can, because SOMEONE SOMEWHERE has been YOU all along.

CUT TO: INT./EXT. WHERE YOU ARE

NFJ walks into the frame, and you shake hands firmly and professionally, like old friends. You suddenly both have your Oscars, and you clink them, staring into the camera and smiling from ear to ear, your teeth sparkling animatedly.

CUT TO: END CREDITS

The credits play over a shot of NFJ and various others working on a project in a studio/shop. NFJ is efficient, observant, and working hard. YOU are there too, proud to have a team that helps you make the best work possible.
